Bude Sea Pool reopens after £40,000 worth of repairs

Bude Sea Pool

Bude Sea Pool, a cherished coastal gem nestled on Summerleaze Beach in Cornwall, has reopened following its annual refurbishment, ensuring a safe and revitalised haven for swimmers of all ages.

A Tradition of Care and Community

Since its inception in 1930, Bude Sea Pool has served as a unique semi-natural tidal swimming spot, offering a sheltered environment for wild swimming on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. This year, the Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP), the dedicated charity responsible for its upkeep, spearheaded a £40,000 maintenance project to preserve and enhance the pool's facilities.

Enhancements for Safety and Enjoyment

The refurbishment focused on several key areas to improve swimmer safety and comfort:

  • Structural Repairs: Cracks in the concrete were meticulously repaired to maintain the pool's integrity.
  • Safety Upgrades: High-grade marine stainless steel handrails were installed, replacing those damaged by storms, and anti-slip coatings were applied to steps to prevent accidents.
  • Aesthetic Improvements: Volunteers and contractors undertook a comprehensive cleaning, jet-washing every surface, and repainting beach huts to enhance the pool's visual appeal.

These enhancements ensure that Bude Sea Pool remains a safe and inviting location for both locals and visitors.

Community-Driven Preservation

The successful completion of the refurbishment underscores the vital role of community involvement in preserving this historic site. FoBSP operates without regular government funding, relying instead on the generosity of local business sponsors, public donations, and memberships.  Their commitment ensures that the pool remains free and accessible to all, fostering a sense of communal pride and ownership.

A Beacon for Safe Wild Swimming

As one of the few tidal pools in the UK, Bude Sea Pool offers a unique swimming experience, combining the exhilaration of open-water swimming with the safety of a controlled environment. Its reopening is timely, aligning with the growing popularity of wild swimming and providing a secure option for enthusiasts.
